Get Involved with your Local Community
There are so many ways you can help raise funds to support the work of Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity. Fundraising takes many shapes and forms and the Community Fundraising Team is here to support you. Whether you are taking part in an organised event or putting on your own, we can support you to help make it a great success.
Are you a local business owner? You could take one of our collection boxes at your business? Place them next to the counter and any time someone has a spare penny they can donate it straight to us, no hassle no fuss!
If you’re a good manager and like meeting people then this could be for you; box agents look after the collection boxes in their area, keeping track of how they are doing and what boxes are where and when.
Event Days, Fairs and Fetes
Are you good at hosting events? Or perhaps you are part of a group that could organise one? It’s social, great fun and can work for everyone, and aren’t those the best kind?
Event Days & Fairs
Are you taking your business or service to a local fete or fair? Perhaps you could take a collection box for us (see above) or run a competition to raise money for the charity, during the day?
Raising awareness for our charity at your events is crucial, not only for helping to raise funds, but also to promote the work we do, so that families who could benefit from our service know we are there to help.
Supermarkets and Stores
Perhaps you know a group, individual or company who can support a cause?
Who You Know
Big supermarket stores, such as Asda, Waitrose or John Lewis accept nomination forms from the local community for charities to be elected as the charities they will support that month.
If you have or are part of an independent business, or you know someone who runs their own company, you can choose to support us in lots of ways, be it donations, prizes, collection boxes, event promotions or one-off events
Restaurants and cafés can hold event days or evenings, or even select a popular drink or meal that can be sold in aid of the charity. Pick your most popular cocktail and donate a small percentage of the profits to the charity, during an event, over the course of a week, or even a month!
Companies and Businesses
There is a lot of scope for larger businesses and companies to take an interest in their communities and support their local charities. This can be in a number of ways, depending on the size and type of business and industry, but some great places to start could be:
1. Direct Donations
2. Employee Fundraising – build a team of co-workers and take on a challenge like the Three Peaks
3. Volunteer days – Team Building and Great Fun for the Office!
4. Sponsorship – you could sponsor items, individuals or teams
5. Charities of the Year – choose to support the charity for a year, with small events, dress down days and more, and keep the charity and your company in focus in the long-term

Become a Volunteer
Volunteering at our event days is an enormous help, we all know how an extra pair of hands on the day can make a huge difference!
Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity is always looking for volunteers to help out at various events, that take place throughout the year. Whether it is marshalling, collecting, playing the part of a mascot or taking care of the most important part of any day (the tea supply of course!) we are always looking for members to join our lovely team of volunteers.
When it comes to volunteering, you have the chance to meet people you would not otherwise have had the pleasure of meeting, the opportunity to support a worthy cause and the experience to spend a day out of the ordinary. We are blessed to have volunteers that will do whatever it takes in the name of charity, and it is thanks to the incredible efforts of those that support and help run our events, that we are able to do the work we do, and have a great time doing it!
What Can I Do?
If you have even a couple of hours to spare, that you would like to donate to a worthy cause, then we would love to hear from you! You can do as little or as much as you would like, and if you are willing to give it a go, we will welcome your generous help and support you however we can.
Here are some of the wonderful ways our brilliant volunteers have supported us;
- Cleaning windows!
- Playing the peasant at the Loxwood Joust
- Making our high-vis jackets look stylish and showing us how marshaling is done
- Collecting coins and raising awareness at our street collections.
- Bringing Peppa Pig to life in mascot form, for all the children to see during our Family Fun Day!
- Office Administration
